Council response

Dear Councillor Lindsey,

Thank you for raising your concerns about security at Bedford House. We take these issues very seriously and would want to reassure you that all these areas are under constant review by the Housing Teams. Major work programmes are designed to meet long term maintenance requirements with replacements/improvements to these areas being supplemented by the day to day repairs and maintenance services. There are also regular inspections by our housing management teams. We have spent over £450 million since 2012 carrying out a vast programme of upgrades on our estates to homes and their surroundings because we believe it is important that our communities are supported, despite the huge central government cuts to our budget since 2010.

In respect of Bedford House, I am told this block has a controlled access system. There has, however, been a major problem with one lift which was out of order for a few months. This was due to a mechanical failure of the main hoisting machine. This has been replaced with a more substantial unit and we are keeping an active watch on the second lift for any signs of failure. The issues around security are areas where we can work together with the local housing manager to make quick improvements. We will write to all residents to remind them that walkways must be kept clear at all times. We will ensure that all pathways are kept clear, clean and tidy by our estate teams. And we will investigate the potential use of CCTV in this block, but unless this is a monitored live system, benefits are sometimes very limited.

We will continue to monitor and review the security on the estate and any issues should continue to be raised with the local housing team. I would like to thank residents and local councillors for bringing this issue to my attention and please do get in touch if you have any further queries.

Best wishes,

Cllr Paul Gadsby
Cabinet Member for Housing
